Which type of FX4 do you need parts for?
The FX4 taxi and its derivatives were made from 1959 through to 1987 and although to look at they all look very similar, there are in fact numerous changes and modifications over the 38 years of production.It is essential to correctly identify which type of FX4 that you need parts for!
FX4 Identification
There are three basic steps:-
STEP 1. What engine does it have?
There were 5 main engine types originally fitted to the FX4
a) Austin 2.178 cc and Austin 2.520cc ----- fitted to early FX4s
b) Land Rover 2.286cc ---- fitted to FX4R from 1978
c) Land Rover 2.495cc ---- fitted to FX4S and Plus
d) Nissan 2.663cc ----- fitted to Fairway and Fairway Driver
In addition, some petrol engine variants, especially for the overseas market (see diagnostic chart)
STEP 2. What do the door handles look like?
a) Chrome Lever - fitted to FX4
b) Chrome Push Button - fitted to FX4 post 1971, FX4R and FX4S
c) Black Plastic Push Button - fitted to Fairway and Fairway Driver
STEP 3. What do the road wheels look like?
a) Flat - fitted to all models pre Fairway Driver.
b) Domed - fitted to Fairway Driver
